In one word, the answer is YES.
The real challenge with using green tea to aid weight loss is that there is a right way and a wrong way to go about it.
The wrong way
If you are using green tea as a magic pill that would instantly melt away fat from your body without taking the right diet and exercise. Then, only green tea in addition to your regular meals will NOT help you lose weight. There are certain requirements for you to successfully achieve weight loss.
Have you ever wonder how you can use green tea for weight loss in the right way?
We’ll start by getting to understand what green tea is, what it contains, it’s health benefits and how to use it effectively as an aid to weight loss.
What exactly is Green Tea
According to Wikipedia, Green tea is a type of tea (an aromatic beverage commonly prepared by pouring hot or boiling water over dried leaves) that is made from Camellia sinensis leaves that have not undergone the same withering and oxidation process used to make oolong teas and black teas.
Whereas Oolong and Black tea made from the same leaves have been fermented to get darker and it’s tannins released. Green tea is gotten from the dried fresh leaves of Camellia sinensis. Read more about green tea production here.

The Right Way to Use Green Tea For Weight Loss
How to brew Green Tea for Weight Loss
Boiling water damages the catechins in green tea. Remember, it’s the catechins that carry the benefits, so we have to be careful how we brew our green tea.
How then do you brew the tea?
- Boil the water.
- Allow it to cool for about 10 minutes.
- Now add your green tea and allow to brew for about a minute or longer if you want a stronger brew.
- Take out the tea leaves and serve.
Matcha green tea tends to be the most nutritious, as you dissolve and drink the tea leaves themselves, rather than just using them to infuse your water.
Quantity Of Green Tea to take in a day for best results
A cup of Green Tea contains about 200mg of catechins and the University of Maryland recommends taking 400mg to 600mg of catechins a day to achieve any weight loss benefits. Therefore to use green tea for weight loss in the right way, take a 2 – 3 cups a day.
The Best Time to Drink Green Tea
The time you take green tea is important if you are to get the benefits.
Although you can enjoy it as a beverage all through the day, it is best to take green tea 45 mins-1 hour before or after your meals. Drinking green tea immediately after meals can inhibit nutrient absorption which is caused by the caffeine and tannins in green tea that acts as an obstruction.
If you want to detox your body using green tea, you need to have little sips of it throughout the day. Green tea’s detoxing properties works slow and you need to have it little by little to reap all the benefits. If you gulp it down in one go, it won’t really detox and simply go out of the body in the form of urine. Brew a strong cup of green tea and let it cool down. Fill 1 bottle with water and add green tea to it. Sip this water throughout the day. This way you also drink 1 liter of water which is half of what is recommended so you can drink 1 liter of plain water in between.
Hot green tea or cold green tea
The temperature you take the tea really does not matter as much as the temperature of the water when you are about to brew the tea. It is advised that you let the water cool a bit. before pouring it on to the leaves as boiling water can destroy the efficacy of the active ingredients in green tea particularly the catechins.
Therefore, you can drink hot green tea and if you prefer, ice cold. Green tea is effective as an aid to weight loss at any temperature.
Which Green is Best for Weight Loss
Green tea taken in the form of a supplement is best for weight loss.
But I know that some of us particularly enjoy drinking it as a beverage. For drinking purposes, the matcha green tea is a better alternative to the tea bags since the powdered matcha is consumed as a whole and the tea bag is discarded with some of the nutrients.
