Do you need good reasons to lose weight in the new year? Today I have compiled remarkable reasons from A to Z. Look through the list and you’ll surely find something to inspire or motivate you to shake off the excess pounds.
Weight loss means different things to different people. From health reasons to aesthetics and even the energy to achieve other goals in life.
A lot of us Mamas sure need the energy to meet up with our various roles. Mama is the wife, mother, teacher, chef, driver, judge, laundry staff etc. That’s us!
What would be your reason? Is it …..
A – Adventure
Thanks to the travel bloggers all around us, we definitely want to see the world. OK, if we can’t afford that, at least have some fun. There is hiking, rock climbing, swimming – remember the bathing suit?
Well, in the coming year, make up your mind to live more. Don’t just exist, go out there and be the mother your kids want to have. Take them out to all the adventurous (and safe) places. To do that, you’ll need to lose some weight and get fitter.

B – Bikini
Summer will be here sooner than you know. Time to get out the bikini. the question is, how prepared are you to put it on? Now is the time to work towards showing off those lovely abs. C – Confidence

D – Diabetes
Research has shown that weight loss reduces the probability of developing insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Even patients who suffer from these conditions and are overweight are also advised to lose weight as well. If you have a family history of diabetes, and your BMI – Body Mass Index is not within the normal range. Please, as a matter of urgency, lose weight in the coming year. There are certain requirements to start a weight loss journey, read up before you begin.
E – Energy
When you drop off the excess weight, there is this sudden tirelessness you seem to have acquired. You wake up with more energy and are just revving to go. Well, Sister, you have dropped the “excess luggage” and your body needs less energy to keep you alive! Ha Ha. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s lose weight together as we step into the new year.
F – Flexibility
When was the last time you could bend over to touch your toes? Let me guess….. you can’t actually recall. Another quick question – who handles the back zip of your dress? Well if you absolutely must have someone help you zip up, then you need that flexibility. You should be able to touch your toes, zip up, squat etc. Losing some weight can help you achieve that and much more.
G – Get Off Medications
One of the well known long-term benefits of losing weight is that the symptoms of some diseases become alleviated. That means that you might be asked to take lower doses if not taken off some of your medications (Yet another way to save money!) Find out from your physician what types of changes he or she thinks the slimmer you might benefit from.
H – Healthy Heart
According to a study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, overweight patients are at risk of dying due to a heart disease up to 12 years earlier than other people. That sure is very scary.
In lay man’s terms, it means that if your BMI is not within the normal range for your height and weight, you might die 12 years earlier than you should. Mamas, our hubby, kids, and parents need us not to mention our friends.
Make up your mind to do the needful – lose weight as you enter the new year. In my humble opinion, this is one of the best reasons to lose weight. Check your BMI here.
I – Improve Skin
Are you still taking sugar? It’s time to STOP. That is if you are interested in a beautiful glowing complexion. Collagen and elastin are the amino acids in the protein that help keep that skin looking young and supple.
Sugar, on the other hand, has been known to break down these very important skin care amino acids. Most if not all healthy diets ask you to cut out sugar from your diet. You’ll end up losing weight and improving your skin.
If you suffer from skin issues such as psoriasis, eczema, or acne, eating a healthy diet free from sugar can actually detoxify your body system thereby clarifying your skin. You might even be able to discard those wrinkle serums.
J – Joint Pain
One of the reasons to lose weight I tell most women is to prevent or help alleviate joint pains. Being overweight can put some serious strain on your joints—especially your knees.
In one study comparing the heaviest patients to the lightest, the chance of being diagnosed with osteoarthritis in one knee was more than 6 times in the heavy group. For both knees, it was almost 18 times.
This means that more overweight you are, the more likely you are to develop knee pains.
K – Killer Abs
Tell me, who doesn’t want a flat tummy? I sure do!
We learn from studies that people who accumulate fat around their abdominal area are more prone to certain medical conditions. Like high blood pressure and diabetes.
In addition to that, it’s quite difficult to look good in an outfit if the tummy is rolling over the skirt and those attractive curves are missing and all that is seen is the protruding tummy.
If you are looking for reasons to lose weight, take a look at your abdominal area. That should spur you on.
L – Look Good
Talking of looking good in an outfit. I recently attended a party where we had to put on an “Aso-Ebi”( More or less a uniform chosen for a particular event). It was amazing how the same outfit looked on different women.
Some actually looked like models while others well….. The way the dress hung so nicely on some made me decide that by this time next year, I would have a waistline measuring 28 inches. I can hear you …..

M – Miscellaneous Reasons to Lose Weight
This is your opportunity to fix in that reason that I have not mentioned like …… You tell me in the comments.

N – No to Obesity
It’s time to say NO to obesity. Mama, aren’t you tired of “lose weight” appearing on your new years’ resolution list?
Obesity has taken on an almost supernatural power.
We can hardly resist when it calls out to us in the form of cupcakes, chocolates, etc. Now I’m starting to preach.
But, seriously, some of us have overcome crippling indebtedness, pregnancy for 9 months and so many difficult situations. Yet, we cannot say no to a tiny piece of candy.
I challenge you to call upon that strong woman inside of you to boot out obesity this time around. Let your desire to overcome obesity be one of the reasons to lose weight in the coming year.
I’ll not act like I don’t know how tempting food can be. All you have to do is SWAP your choice of food for healthier ones. Here is a list of 22 low carb substitutes for a quicker weight loss.
O – Organised
One of the best reasons to lose weight is to get your life organized. There is a certain peace that comes with knowing that you are putting things in order in your life. It takes away fear and keeps you calm. Going to see your doctor for your annual medical check-up is not so scary. (I sincerely hope you are having your annual health checks).
If you are overweight, you are more likely to put it off. Since you already know that one of the first things your doctor would check is your BMI. At least if there is a medical situation, you’d know you didn’t contribute to it due to your excess weight.
Taking a decision to look after your health is one of the best reasons to lose weight in the new year.
P – Pregnancy
Okay, Mama, I hear you. A baby comes with pregnancy and the pregnancy left you with a protruding tummy. I know the lines… I said that for so many years.
The precious bundle of joy is not the reason you are overweight. It is your refusal to take a decision, learn what to eat to lose weight and follow through that has kept you there.
You can get back your before the baby figure. Choose to get back your figure and let that be one of your reasons to lose weight in the new year.
Q – Quality Life
With all that extra weight, you may have been limited in what kinds of exercises, activities, or even vacations you could go on. With a trimmer frame, look forward to engaging in outdoor activities you were never able to participate in before like hiking, kayaking, skiing, mountain biking, surfing, or rock climbing. You can even get the whole family involved!
R – Relief Stress
Many of the foods that worsen stress levels are the same foods that stifle your weight loss progress, while the foods that alleviate stress are those you’d eat during your slim-down journey. For example, foods high in refined sugar—like soda or ice cream—can increase levels of stress hormones like cortisol.
Exercise, on the other hand, reduces stress and cortisol levels which is another reason to lose weight.
S -Self Improvement
For some, the reason to lose weight might be for self-improvement. There is a saying that personal development precedes financial freedom. Perhaps one of your goals for the new year is an increase in your earnings.
You’ll need to be focused, energetic, hardworking and leave no room for laziness. Therefore, have a plan to discard the excess weight by choosing the right diet and exercise program.
T – Tight Glutes
Your ‘glutes’ or your gluteal muscles, as they are more formally known refers to the muscles in your butt.
For many individuals, their glutes often remain ‘inactive’ or ‘switched off’. Inactive glutes can mean that the muscles are weak and are not relied on as much as they should be during physical movements.
Strong glute muscles are extremely important as these muscles can have a major impact on your overall body strength; your glutes supports your core.
Considering this, it makes sense that weak glutes can lead to poor posture, lower back pain, balance issues, lack of strength, muscle pain, etc.
U – Undecided
Fine. I hear you. You do not have reasons to lose weight. You are comfortable with the way you are. I hope and pray for you to see the dangers of being overweight and change your mind.

Vim means life.
Other words used to describe vim include drive, dash, enthusiasm, fire, force, strength vigor etc. If you feel you need any of these qualities, get on an exercise program. The improved blood circulation will take more oxygen into your body organs. This will result in more strength, vigor, and vitality.
W – Wellness
X – Xercise
Endorphins are the feel-good hormones. During exercises, this hormone is released into the bloodstream making you feel good.
Normally after the initial aches and pains of starting an exercise program, you begin to look forward to it. It is almost like a high and you begin to crave that feeling. Especially if you exercise in the morning, it just sets the tone for the day.
Not to mention the health benefits of improved oxygen efficiency. More energy, better sleep, and lower stress levels.
Y – Youthfulness
If you take on the ketogenic diet, it has a way of taking away fat from the face and giving you a natural facelift. You suddenly look 10 years younger. And quite a number of people have gotten pregnant after they lost weight through the keto diet.
Z – Zzzz – Better Sleep
Getting a better sleep at night is one of the important reasons to lose weight.
Just in the event that you are not aware, your diet can control how easily you fall asleep and how well rested you are in the morning.
Being overweight can cause you not to sleep well. the excess fat around the neck can lead to snoring and sleep apnea – which is a condition where you stop breathing repeatedly while you are sleeping. It has been associated with fat pressing on the airways and gets worse as you add more weight.
There are way too many health issues associated with being overweight. Weight loss and exercising can lead to a good nights rest which can help regulate your metabolism, hormonal systems, and more.
It helps you feel, think and live better right away.
To Wrap Things Up
There can be a million excuses (which has kept you back up until this moment) for remaining overweight. But, all you need is just one good reason to lose weight in the new year.
